Our Story Begins Over 200 Years Ago…

The History of The Estate

In 1804, there were just 17 United States of America. The Louisiana Purchase was made, and Lewis and Clark’s exploration of the lands began. And in New Haven, the Townshend family built a manor house on their sprawling farmlands that became one of the most beautiful historic sites in Connecticut.

This would be one of the first homes in the area, but far from the last. Other large farms, smaller neighborhoods and Connecticut landmarks sprouted up. Families arrived, put down roots, and made lives for themselves and future generations.

The Townshend family called The Estate home for over two centuries. Now, they have moved on, and the property remains a gem among all the historic landmarks of Connecticut. A place of legend as much as beauty, The Estate is now the perfect setting to celebrate any event with your the ones you love.

The Gothic Revival Legacy

One of The Estate’s most beautiful features—and what makes it one of the most striking historic sites in Connecticut and New England—is its distinct style, known as Gothic Revival architecture.

First appearing in the late 18th century, the Gothic Revival style began in Europe and was inspired by the continent’s medieval Gothic architecture. The movement was known for singularly beautiful details including:

  • Tracery: Decorative patterns crafted using slender bars of stonework joined together, you will find intricate tracery when gazing through The Estate’s expansive windows.
  • Pointed Arches: Reminiscent of the pointed windows you might see in Paris’ Notre Dame Cathedral, the Estate features these arches in its stately front doors, windows and other openings found throughout the manor.
  • Decorative Finials: Ornamentation typically found atop turrets and gables in Gothic Revival architecture, The Estate boasts many above its roofs and windows in designs that gorgeously balance bold angles and organic curves.
  • Steeply Pitched Roofs: Granting sharp points that contrast with the delicate, curved patterns found in its mouldings, finials and more, The Estate’s steeply pitched roofs grant the manor a sense of height and drama.
  • Asymmetrical Floor Plans: Gothic Revival Architecture commonly featured floor plans in which the two sides of a home did not mirror each other exactly. The Estate follows in this fascinating tradition, and the result is a more organic appearance and flow as you move throughout the manor.
  • Lancet Windows: Tall, narrow and featuring the characteristic pointed arches, The Estate commonly features these decorative viewpoints, including one at the manor’s summit, from which you can glimpse an unobstructed view of the Connecticut coast.

As it spread across the Atlantic, the Gothic Revival movement gained popularity in the Nutmeg State, and enlivens several Connecticut landmarks today, for many reasons.

Primarily, it was popular because of its soft and romantic qualities, which translated well to New England. In a land of sprawling forests and rolling hills, Gothic Revival was a style that blended with the natural landscape. Now, even though the region has changed with the times, historic sites in Connecticut built in this aesthetic are still reminiscent of trees and mountains thanks to their soaring columns and dramatically pitched roofs. Knowing this, there’s little mystery as to why couples find venues with Gothic Revival flair to be perfect settings for their wedding day.
